Rosazzo da Rosa - 7^ edizione

7 e 8 maggio 2011

The Dialogues of the Abbey – The mother tongue of architecture is construction

PRESS RELEASE

The mother tongue of architecture is construction

The presentation of the book "Provare, capire, costruire: esperienze di didattica della costruzione" held at the Abbey of Rosazzo and organized by the Abbey of Rosazzo Foundation was an occasion for a comparison of the latest trends in Europe and the United States in the teaching of architecture. In his introduction, Augusto Romano Burelli, president of the Degree Course in the Science of Architecture at the University of Udine, painted a rather critical picture of the Italian panorama of the architecture schools, noting that very few of them gave baukunst a central role as a connotative and innovative element in the teaching of architecture. He then underlined the importance of the experience described in the presented book, which was gained in the Grands Ateliers of Villefontaine in the region of Lyon, wehre a group of teachers and students led by Mauro Bertagnin from the recently established Udine school of architecture carried out a teaching experiment involving the merging of their experience in the Project and Construction Laboratory of the Graduate Course in the Science of Architecture with the corresponding group from the Lyon school of architecture led by Serge Monnot. In the experiment Burelli captured elements of definite interest for approaching a method of teaching architecture which sees the materials and construction techniques at the centre of the learning path of the architecture student. And it is precisely this new centrality, to which Mauro Bertagnin referred in presenting the book, which constitutes an initial summary of the complex teaching experience he performed within the Project and Construction Laboratory. The planning and construction of modular origami, bricks of raw earth, building textures, "inhabited walls", arches, vaults and cupolas and finally the plastering are the elements of a teaching path aimed at providing the young architecture student at the Udine campus with the required insight to support, integrate and complete the theoretical notions presented in support of the practical building experience. The speeches by Daniela Deperini and Alberto Carminati focused on feng-shui and the relationship between origami and mathematics in the economy in the overall break-down of the presented teaching experiment. During the debate, the speech by the student representative, Joshua Cesa, emphasized the particular interest for the teaching experiment which offers a new approach to young people wishing to undertake the complex task of training the architecture student.

PRESS RELEASE – Concert Vocinconsuete

On Friday 21 November 2008, at 8.30 pm the Abbey of Rosazzo will host a performance of the female vocal quartet Vocinconsuete.

In the splendid Frescoes Hall of the abbey, Chiara de Santi, Lucia Mattiussi, Annalisa Ponton and Elisa Ulian will perform jazz music written for the group by the Friulian pianist and arranger Rudy Fantin and Annalisa Ponton, singer in the group. The evening will also be marked by the appearance of the double bass player Simone Serafini.

The evening's programme is particularly rich and varied. It will begin with the classics When the saints go marching in and Night and day by Cole Porter, to then arrive at the more modern The anchor song by Björk and Teardrop by Massive Attack, and taking in the quartet's unpublished improvisations along the way.

Vocinconsuete have a very rich repertoire which includes the more classic jazz numbers and pieces dedicated to free improvisation. Their improvised music is the fruit of years of research and experimentation on all that the voice can convey: discourse of voices that break free of formal bonds to discover in the newfound freedom the most complete harmony

"Petals" by Carla Asquini

PRESS RELEASE - Petals by Carla Asquini

The painting exhibition Petals by Carla Asquini will be inaugurated on Saturday 11 October 2008, at 6 pm at the Abbey of Rosazzo in the presence of Lidia Driutti, Mayor of the Municipality of Manzano, and Cristiano Fornasarig, Councillor responsible for Culture, Tourism and Territory of the Municipality di Manzano.

In the beautiful setting of the abbey the artist will present a series of works on the theme of flowers never seen before in public. The exhibition will also be enriched by a number of theme-based displays located in the cloister as well as inside and outside the building.

The inauguration will be accompanied by a performance of the vocal quartet Vocinconsuete: four female voices which intertwine to give life to a harmony at times written and at times improvised. Chiara de Santi, Lucia Mattiussi, Annalisa Ponton and Elisa Ulian perform jazz music written for the group by the Friulian pianist and arranger Rudy Fantin and by Annalisa Ponton, singer in the group.

Born in Udine, Carla Asquini has performed an intense creative activity enriched year after year by numerous exhibitions which have received widespread critical acclaim. She graduated in Udine and performed a specialization in the United States under the guidance of the Hungarian artist Markos Lajos. Her numerous exhibitions have taken place not only in Italy, but also abroad: France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, the United States and China.

She has mastered a refined technique which allows her to create compositions where the protagonists are flowers, and their alluring beauty is heightened by the vivid colours chosen by the artist. Shading is ever-present, but the skilled way in which the whites, purples, turquoises, greens, yellows and reds are harmonized explains how the Friulian painter manages to achieve results of such intensity and poetic emotion. The colours of Carla Asquini are arranged and organized on the canvas in refined compositions.

A common characteristic to all her works is the significant luminosity, with light symbolizing life. The flowers of Carla Asquini are displayed in all there florid but fragile existence, symbolizing life and the power of emotions. Observing the canvases we enter the artist's floral universe, following an intricate path composed of stems, leaves and attractive petals which leads the observer to the heart of the flower, the fulcrum of the work.

Carla Asquini opens a window onto the enchantment of nature and captures the poetry of life.

The exhibition is open every day until 30 November, from 9 am to 12 midday and 3 pm to 6 pm (holidays included) - entrance is free.

Further information can be found at the website http://www.abbaziadirosazzo.it/ or by calling +39 334 62 68 296.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia.

ROSES OF ROSAZZO – 4th edn.

Once again the Abbey of Rosazzo (Manzano - Udine) will be the superb setting of a cultural event which has become one of the most awaited of the Italian Northeast: "Roses of Rosazzo".

Scheduled for 9-11 May 2008, this real festival of the rose is part of the initiatives adopted by the Abbey of Rosazzo Foundation. The aim is to enhance this millenary historical-religious site, which bears witness to a tradition of faith and culture and today stands at the centre of renewed interest.

The event follows a formula which in the past has proven highly successful and which over the three days sees the alternation of concerts, conferences and visits to the stands of some of the best nursery gardeners and exhibitors of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto. Visitors can admire and purchase for their own balconies or gardens the magnificent and perfumed plants of the old English and Italian roses, whose intense and delicate scent complete the harmonious atmosphere of the abbey.

In addition to the roses themselves, the stands also have on offer paintings, embroidery, ceramics, essential oils and soaps. Everything on show is related to the rose, the queen of flowers and the queen of May.

With prior booking guests may visit the path of the roses which winds around the walls of the abbey passing by the tremendous spectacle of some extremely rare and precious old roses, such as Rosa Laevigata, Celine Foréstier, York and Lancaster and many others.

THE ABBEY OF ROSAZZO

First-time visitors to the abbey are generally unable to withhold their amazement and spontaneously express their admiration and surprise over the environment, the panorama and the entire abbey complex.

It is in fact a real fortune for our area to have such a "privileged site" so close to hand. For those in search of prayer and contemplation, or for those in search of solace or advice from a friendly face, this welcoming, harmonious and relaxing atmosphere always has something to offer.

As we approach the warmer months the abbey has a number of extraordinary events to offer, such as The Dialogues of the Abbey, the Easter Concert, The Roses of Rosazzo and the solemn celebration of the Festival of St Peter, to whom the church is dedicated.

But even in its daily routine the abbey is always an open invitation of special interest.

Each Sunday at 6 pm holy mass is celebrated and always accompanied by liturgical chant. One hour earlier a priest is available for confession or for dialogue with whomever wishes it.

With particular regard to liturgical chant, we wish to form a small choral support group to assist the assembly in the chant and participation in public worship.

Anyone able to participate is invited to call for information or communicate their desire to join to the rector of the abbey (+39 0432 75 90 91) or to Franco Pellegrini (+39 335 706 84 55).

The church and the abbey are open each day from 9 am to 12 midday and 3 pm to 6 pm every day of the year. This means that they invite, receive and offer all that they are in silence and simplicity.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

PRESS RELEASE - Christmas Concert at the Abbey

The traditional Christmas Concert held in the suggestive setting of the Church of the Abbey of Rosazzo will be held on Friday 28 December at 7 pm.

The programme offered this year by the Abbey of Rosazzo Foundation, thanks to the constant commitment of J. Irmtrau Thurn Valsassina Della Torre, includes the performance of pieces grouped together under the title "Vienna in the fashion of the early nineteenth century in music".

Johann Nepomuk HUMMEL Quintet op.87 in B flat for violin, viola, cello double bass and piano

Franz SCHUBERT "Trout" Quintet in A major op.114, D. 667 for violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano

The Quintet op. 87 was written by Hummel in 1802 but not published until 1822. The work is traditionally considered the earliest example of composition of this kind, and was possibly used as a model by Schubert, together with the transcription of the Septet op. 74, for his "Trout" Quintet.

In a letter dated 1858, a friend of Schubert, Albert Stadler, writes that the Quintet in A major The trout was composed for Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy patron of the city of Steyr and amateur cello player. Paumgartner appears to have suggested Schubert include a series of variations on the theme of his favourite Lied, Die Forelle (The trout) in the composition, and also to use the "Hummel Quintet, recte Septet" as a model. This is probably reference to op. 74, published in 1816 and transcribed by the author himself for a string quartet and piano.

Composed in 1819, the "Trout" Quintet is in five movements. By inserting an Andante between the first (Allegro vivace) and the third (Scherzo) movements Schubert creates an extensive symmetrical structure (fast - slow - fast - slow - fast) which is also reflected in the choice of tones: A - F - A - D - A, all in major keys. The most curious characteristic of The trout, however, is the treatment of the piano as a monophonic instrument: the right hand and the left hand almost always play a single melody, often without chords.

THE ARCHIVE OF ROSAZZO: HISTORICAL MEMORY OF THE ABBEY

PRESS RELEASE

Udine, 26 November 2007

As part of the initiatives promoted by the Abbey of Rosazzo Foundation known as The Dialogues of the Abbey, the last study day for the current year will take place on Saturday 1 December at the Abbey of Rosazzo in Manzano with the topic "The archive of Rosazzo: historical memory of the abbey".

The event is promoted in collaboration with the Diocesan Archive of Udine, the director of which, don Sandro Piussi, will shed light on the archiving techniques according to the directives released by the Italian Episcopal Conference for Ecclesiastic Archives.

The Dialogue will be enriched with speeches by Katia Bertoni (Historical Research), Luca Olivo (The Inventory of the Trust) and Katja Piazza (Analysis of a Criminal Trial). THE PROTECTION OF UNACCOMPANIED FOREIGN MINORS

PRESS RELEASE

As part of the initiatives promoted by the Abbey of Rosazzo Foundation known as The Dialogues of the Abbey, the next appointment on the calendar of events will take place on Saturday 20 October at the Abbey of Rosazzo in Manzano with the topic "The protection of unaccompanied foreign minors".

The event is promoted in cooperation with the Association for International Adoption Arcobaleno based in Padua but operating in Friuli Venezia Giulia for a number of years, not only in the field of adoptions, but also in the field of humanitarian projects in favour of both Italian and foreign minors.

The topic of the conference is of particular interest for our society, being an especially sensitive issue for border zones where immigration, particularly originating from Eastern Europe, is creating increasingly significant problems.

Magistrates, the police, public bodies and private organizations are faced with the phenomenon daily.

It is an issue which in many cases unfortunately is not portrayed in a positive light by the media due to episodes related to the exploitation of minors or criminal activities.

The presence of unaccompanied foreign minors in fact creates legal, scholastic and health problems with consequences in the economic field.

In line with the tradition for awareness and attention to these questions, the Abbey of Rosazzo Foundation and the Association Arcobaleno have therefore promoted this opportunity to reflect on the issue, based on an exchange of experience and proposals derived from the daily activity of experts, consultants and qualified operators in both Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The aim is an analysis of common experience in view of new possible work practices with special attention to the figure and role of the voluntary tutor, which having been introduced into the Italian legal system is currently finding broad areas of operation with satisfying results.

The programme of the speakers has also been defined while bearing in mind the need to alternate between legal elements and the events of daily experience, and above all with the direct testimony of those who for professional or personal reasons tackle the issue with a special sensitiveness.

“GENESIS OF WATER”

From 15 September 2007 to 18 November 2007 the original works of the Japanese artist Yoshin Ogata will be on display in the superb setting of the Abbey of Rosazzo at Manzano (UD).

The sculptures by Ogata appear to be completely freed from the weight of geometrical rigour.

His work is characterized by the perfection of the idea of roundness without the rigidity of lines and contours and the "volumes can flake away in the light and air without the sculpture losing solidity and stability".

His sculptures have been described as a symbolic reference to life. The reference, in that sense, is to the drop which Ogata often places above the two stelae and which summarizes the sky-earth cycle.

The work of Ogata is monumental with a verticality which suggests the sacredness of the object and sanctions "the founding event".

Yoshin Ogata is an artist who has lived for twenty years in Tuscany. His works encapsulates the tensions of modern society.

The atmospheric elements contribute to the detachment of the rock which in rolling and changing shape, follows the mythology of the origins of sculpture.

Ogata's works have been described as poetry in which the visible becomes a pretext for drawing on the invisible.

Beyond the fragment placed before our eyes lies infinite space and time.

And in the amalgam of the invisible there is room for dreaming, memory, imagination...

The non visible stands out overbearingly in close up and captures our entire attention.

A theme of the sculpture of Yoshin Ogata is the meeting between man and water, in a formal simplicity which transmits the entire narrative complexity of the theme in which one senses the tension of becoming eternal in the celebration of water.

BIOGRAPHY

Yoshin Ogata was born in Miyakonojo in Japan on 18 November 1948. He exhibited his first sculptures in 1969 at the Shinseisaku-Kyokai in Tokyo and in 1970 he moved to London where he studied at the British Museum.

After a long journey across Europe he travel to the United States and Mexico, where he continued to do research in the local museums. For nearly twenty years he has been living and working in Italy.
