THE ROSE PATH
The Abbey of Rosazzo, a historic complex dating back to the 11th century and located in the heart of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, represents an example of excellence in the architectural and landscape heritage of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Home to prestigious art exhibitions, concerts, conferences and events, it offers visitors the opportunity to admire an unparalleled spectacle, both for a view that overlooks the entire Region, as well as for the Abbey's Rose Garden, particularly evocative in the month of May, above all during the Rosazzo da Rosa event.
The Abbey Rose Garden, or Roseto, illustrated here alongside, is made up of a path that runs almost right around the perimeter, a south-facing terrace called the Belvedere, and various flower beds located within the walls.
The planting dates back to 1998 and all the most important families of old roses are present, as well as several modern ones.
The rose garden includes different types of gallica (Complicata, Tuscany Superb), bourbon (Variegata di Bologna, M.me Pierre Oger, M.me Isaac Pereire, Souvenir de la Malmaison), Chinese (Mutabilis, Banskiae alba plena), damask (York and Lancaster, Kazanlik), noisette (Belle Vichyssoise, M.me Alfred Carrière), hybrid musks (Mozart, Cornelia, Ballerina), wichuraiana (Albertine, Albéric Barbier, New Dawn), botanical roses (including R. laevigata), climbing roses (Alchemist, Iceberg, Guinée) as well as numerous specimens of polyantha, floribunda, multiflora and hybrid tea roses.
A special mention goes to the native Rosa di Rosazzo (an Alba rose), lost due to the terrible frost of 1929 and rediscovered thanks to emigrants from Val del Torre, and the Aiuola Fineschi born from a collaboration with the prestigious Roseto Botanico “Carla Fineschi” of Cavriglia, near Arezzo, a city in Tuscany, which hosts rare roses not on the market, including various hybrid teas (Alger, Tonnerre, Flaming Peace).
Walking along the path, you can discover the names of the roses that go to make it up and some curiosities about them.
Please note that the rose path is open to the public during the month of May.
